John Cassell, Apr 26, 2008, 6:12PM EDTHi Morgan...
Just saying hello. I know we disagree on many things [tho agree on several others], but i want you to know I truly respect your opinion and always welcome your input on anything I write. You are a remarkable woman and remind me rather closely of an author friend of mine who lives in a cabin in Colorado with her husband. Have a nice day. John -

John Cassell, Feb 26, 2008, 1:38AM ESTI really can't fault Truman for that, except with hindsight [tho truly informed people back then.typified by Col. Jules Roy of the French Air Force, and yourself had that been the era you were an adult were clearly seeing the handwriting on the wall]. Had we been true to our self-righteous proclamations calling for self-determination of all peoples during WWII the decision might have been different. Yet with the surrender of Japan, Southeast Asia Command was so short of soldiers Mountbatten was compelled to keep order in Indochina [prevent looting, banditry, etc] using Japanese soldiers...a very explosive situation. I suspect Truman's decision had something to do with that disgusting no-win situation.
I'm not really sure what the international law status of Indochina would have been at that point. France, who as Roy has said, "never gave up anything that wasn't wrested from her" still considered the place theirs and other than the japanese conquest it would have been. We meanwhile, were faced with a very ugly situation in Europe which made our first priority supporting our allies there, in spite of their determination to reestablish their colonial empires.
The awful thing was that an opportunity to work with the same guerilla movements who constituted the Vietnamese Communist regime may have been squandered, and yet these were Communists in the days of Josef Stalin... did the opportunity in fact exist? I really don't know. Roy thought it did. Boy would I have loved a few hours to ask that man questions! I am a great admirer of his, tho don't agree with everything he says.
What DID happen, of course, was that the French continually misjudged the will to win of their guerilla foes AND continually supported corrupt and hated locals. There were supposedly efforts made to bring about associated states with all sides represented, but the corrupt characters in the end carried the day and later went to their doom, with us going right with them. Of course now the Vietnamese Communists sell their people as slaves in sweatshops around the world, including American Samoa, where I was involved in a very disgusting case.
Your mention of the last chopper out of Nam brought tears to my eyes. I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB then and we were standing around a TV in the orderly room, watching the blackest day in our history unfold at the embassy there, all of us silently sobbing in memory of so many of our brothers who died in vain in the course of that insane ugly war for LBJ and Brown & Root, Inc.
Until LBJ decided to do the fighting so that venal ARVN generals could use their men to stage coups, it was little more than betting on one gang of thieves against another, tho Kennedy had begun authorizing us to play a combat role. Gen. Navarre's plan might have worked back in 1953...it sure facially made sense and he took over the C-in-C slot with the right attitude, but of course it ended in disaster. I guess it all goes back to what one historical commentator said of Hitler and his Weimar enemies..."in the end, he cared more than they". the same was certainly true of Ho and Giap compared to the succession of 4th republic governments.
I realize I am not as international law oriented as you are. I don't believe ANYONE [in power---Communist or Imperialist] took that position seriously when it went against what they thought they could grab by force or propaganda.
A fascinating discussion and I hope you won't stop because we disagree. I have seldom encountered anyone with your grasp of history and it is REFRESHING. Altho in the end we were on the same side as far as that war went, I can honestly say I don't know how I would have reacted to the situation confronting Truman. Jules Roy definitely agrees with you. -
John Cassell, Feb 25, 2008, 2:55PM ESTyes...you are soooo right. somebody made the decision a few years back to carry the franchise to the laziest, least concerned people, and then to make sure they voted on election day. They now pick juries from drivers license people in many states [to catch the dumbos who still got through the net] so more criminals go free. we are indeed doing this to ourselves. I wish it didn't bother me so much, but I was cursed with a good memory.
I remember when Ike came to Atlantic City in 1959. It seemed the whole town was lined up along Atlantic Ave, wildly cheering as he went by, standing up in his open car, smiling that magnificent smile of his. He looked right at me. The memory still warms me.
In 1962, I met Harry Truman on a Penna RR train. I was blocking his way putting our luggage up. "take your time, son," he told me. Later i saw him in the dining car. He talked to me, then gave me his autograph. when he came back through our car everyone broke into applause. Those were the days. -
John Cassell, Feb 25, 2008, 3:47AM ESTMorgan.....I really don't know when it got so off-kilter. Nowadays the only questions is who gets the federal grants. The really important question back when we had a federal union was whether the federal government had any right to so shamelessly impose its dometic policies on the states. Now of course it's gone one step further and they impose their federal will on individual families.
First they made meaningless the 10th Amendment...and now the 9th. As I re-read this I sound like a nut even to myself, it's been so long ago. John -
